Twenty-seven-year-old legislator of the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Robert Serra, was found dead in his home on Thursday. He was the National Assembly’s youngest parliamentarian. A criminologist who spearheaded initiatives to tackle violent crime in Venezuela, Serra was elected to the National Assembly in 2010.
Authorities confirmed that Serra and his partner Maria Herrera had been murdered in their home in Caracas. Unofficial reports say Serra’s body showed signs of torture before he was killed. Two years ago, Serra’s bodyguard, detective Alexis Barreto, was also assassinated. In April, another member of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela Eliecer Otaiza, a former intelligence chief was murdered.
