Comedy Central actress Jessica Williams did a “news correspondent” bit on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart that has irked the fan base of One Direction. Williams joked that a member of the English boy band One Direction is part of a new super terrorist group. 1D band member Zayn Malik wasn’t mentioned but Directioners were quick to assume and spread the word that Zayn is the butt of the joke. Zayn is Muslim.
Directioners created the hashtag #TheDailyShowGoneTooFar to voice their disappointment and accusations of racism. One wrote: “@TheDailyShow why don’t you apologise for saying such racist remarks about a member of one direction.” Another wrote: “I JUST FREKIN RETWEETED THE VIDEO OF THE DAILY SHOW N IM LIKE WTF CME ON THTS NOT FUNNY TO INVOLVE ONE DIRECTION IN A TERRORIST GROUP!!” And then there was this comment: “The reaction is what The Daily Show wanted; to prove that One Direction fans are stupid.”
