Rock star Gwen Stefani of No Doubt fame is now a judge on the talent competition The Voice. Stefani and the other judges–Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine–select singers who audition on the show to join their individual teams. The singers will be coached (Gwen’s team gets to be coached by her husband Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush) and then they’ll compete against one another.
On the first part of the two-night season premiere, Stefani liked the sound of 22-year-old Clara Hong –she, Adam and Pharrell all pushed their “I Want You” buttons while listening to Hong sing. But Gwen thought Clara lacked stage presence. To demonstrate her point, Stefani grabbed the microphone and sang a few lines of her super popular song “Just a Girl.” She strutted around the stage and encouraged the audience to sing along, which they did. Stefani tried to explain to Hong, referring to the audience, “You can suck them into your world.” Perhaps suck was the wrong word. Hong chose Levine as her coach. Levine, for the record, is a decade younger than Gwen. The Voice airs Monday and Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.
