Illinois Republican candidate for governor Bruce Rauner has shown he knows how to get attention. In Chicago there are a few ways guaranteed to get you noticed. Here’s a starter list: bribe a Cook County judge, walk around town with Michael Jordan, promise to sell Barack Obama’s seat in Congress, be a confidant to Derrick Rose’s physician–or you can ask Bears legend Mike Ditka for advice. Rauner chose the Ditka strategy.
Rauner’s campaign is running an ad that features Rauner talking to Ditka in Ditka’s Near North Side Restaurant in Chicago. Ditka tells Rauner how to treat special interests. “You attack…Bam… Hit ’em right in the mouth.” The aggressive advice from the former NFL player and Super Bowl-winning coach (currently an on-air personality) is hitting some people the wrong way just now. The NFL is currently taking a massive public relations hit itself for its initially lax punishment of Ravens running back Ray Rice, who was seen on video punching his fiancee right in the mouth in an Atlantic City elevator.
