Patricia Yurena Rogdriguez, who holds the beauty pageant title of Miss Spain 2013, came out as a lesbian by sharing a photo on–what else?–Instagram. Twitter had no comment, but rumors have top Twitter management planning to win the “coming out wars” with Instagram, its main rival in instant publishing. Big reveals are the lifeblood of the two companies and Instagram has taken a Kim-Kardashian’s-ass-sized leap in popularity, thanks to people like, well, Kim Kardashian.
Last year Twitter had by far the top social share by a lesbian when Ellen DeGeneres’s group Oscar tweet went super viral. This year it’s not first choice. Yurena Rogdriguez becomes the first top-level pageant queen to come out publicly. The caption on her photo reads “Romeo and Juliette.” (We sure hope it works out better than that!) Another beauty queen swiftly followed–Maria Walsh of Philadelphia, who won Ireland’s Rose of Tralee beauty contest and then annouced she is a lesbian. Walsh is old school though–she told a newspaper.
