Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest environmentally-conscious celebrity to visit Canada’s controversial oil-sands. The Hollywood star visited Fort McMurray in Alberta as part of a documentary he is making. He also narrates another ecology documentary Carbon, released online this week. DiCaprio is a long-time environmental activist: he currently serves on the board of the World Wildlife Fund and Natural Resources Defense Council and started his own environmental charity foundation in 1998.
Many celebrities have been critical of the development of Alberta’s tar sands. Director James Cameron said the area “will be a curse” if not managed properly. Earlier this year rock legend Neil Young said “it’s one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen” and compared the destruction to Hiroshima.
