The trailer is called “Our Leader the Mockingjay” and there’s the iconic whistle, of course, at the end. There’s not a lot of detail here, a quick (just a minute) roving over the territory and a stark-faced Katniss vowing, as if she’s just discovering it herself, that she will fight in the rebellion. “I am,” she says spookily, “I will.” Not surprising that her commitment is spooky, because one of the first things we hear in the trailer is Julianne Moore saying, “She can’t do it. The Games destroyed her.”
Seems maybe The Games only hardened Katniss’s resolve. Seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman in this dystopian environment is also spooky. His odd sad death–itself dystopian–adds a ghostly element to the atmosphere. Jennifer Lawrence–in just the few seconds we see of her–seems to be taking this role to a new even higher level, acting almost entirely with her stillness. It should be exciting. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 lights up screens on November 21.
