Each day there are 70,000 tablet computers running Google’s Android software activated. That’s just tablets, where the company lags. In September Eric Schmidt of Google said there are now 1.3 million Android-powered devices of all kinds activated each day. Facebook announced in September that it now has over a billion users accessing its network at least once a month. At the end of 2004, that number was a paltry million. It was still only 20 million when 2008 arrived. Apple says it sold 3 million iPads and iPad minis in the three days following the mini’s release last month. Hundreds of millions of people tweet, many of them all day long.
It’s a world where a magazine called Wired feels as redundant as a magazine called Life. One old school tech behemoth (which surprisingly posted pretty nice results recently) had it right early: AOL, you’ll remember, stands for America On Line.
