Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day is expected to sing her inspirational song ‘Rise Up’ at the 2016 ESPY Awards. The moving song includes the lyrics: “I’ll rise up / In spite of the ache / I’ll rise up / And I’ll do it a thousand times again / For you ….” Day is featured in the ‘Rise Up’ inspiration music video — but she’s not the star. A young woman is seen taking care of her partner, a military veteran in a wheelchair. The video (see below) was directed by filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (The Visit, The Sixth Sense). Day recently sang the song with Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato at a concert in Florida honoring the 49 victims killed in the Orlando shooting in June.
The song is appropriate on many levels for the ESPY Awards. One of the people honored includes U.S. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Marks, who was severely injured while working as a combat medic in Iraq. Marks will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPY Awards which will be televised on July 13 at 8pm on ABC.
