Even recovering Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman‘s Senate colleagues — including those like Sen. Rand Paul, with whom Fetterman rarely finds himself in agreement — are applauding Fetterman’s comic response to “fringe” conspiracy rumors. (Fetterman took direct humorous aim at the idea that Democrats have employed a body double to push their agenda while he recovers from depression.)
Sen. Paul had this to say about Fetterman’s Colbert-like response to the body double conspiracy theory:
“Funny wins over stupid. Great response from the senator from PA. I say: Lay off Fetterman’s health and talk about policy…There’s lots of material that doesn’t attack someone’s misfortune.”

Perhaps it’s Sen. Paul’s background as a medical doctor that makes him sensitive to Fetterman’s situation. (He also may know that, as the old Reader’s Digest used to say, “Laughter is the best medicine.”)
Or perhaps Paul’s move is hardly as altruistic as it seems on the surface: With Fetterman’s health issues serving as a distraction, Paul implies, policy is forced to take a back seat. The Kentucky Senator wants to argue policy with Democrats in the Senate, where Fetterman is a newly seated key to a very slim Democratic majority. As Paul says: “There’s lots of material.”
