The Dateline episode “Devil’s Bargain” investigates the 2018 murder of 29-year-old mother Kelsey Berreth. Dateline reporter Andrea Canning travels to Woodland Park, Colorado to interview the investigators who cracked the case. They admit to making “a deal with the devil” in order to send Berreth’s murderer to prison.
The devil in this case is Krystal Lee, girlfriend of Patrick Frazee who killed Berreth (his fiancée). He beat Berreth to death with a baseball bat in Berreth’s home. Krystal Lee admitted to helping Frazee clean up the bloody crime scene, and was later sentenced to three years in prison for tampering with evidence in the murder.
Without her plea deal — which included testifying against Frazee and showing authorities where Frazee burned Berreth’s body, — Lee faced 100 years in prison.
D.A. Dan May said: “We did a deal with the devil. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about that. And I’m not proud of that. But there’s no question that Kelsey wouldn’t have had the sure justice today without making that deal with the devil.”
CBS News reports that Frazee, who was convicted of first-degree murder and other charges and was sentenced to life in prison plus 156 years without parole, plans to appeal. Dateline airs Fridays at 9 pm on NBC.
