Maggie Rogers is the 25-year-old singer/songwriter from Maryland who got her big break from Pharrell Williams, who was teaching a master class at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, where she was studying.
The video of Williams listening to her song “Alaska” (see above) went viral in June 2016. [Related: Pharrell’s PLANT Hats — What’s the Deal?]
Rogers graduated from the program and signed with Capitol Records soon after. She is nominated for “Best New Artist” at the 2020 Grammy Awards.
Her competition includes Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, and Spain’s Rosalia.
Rogers considers herself a winner already. When she shared the signed letter (below) from President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, who wrote “we are huge fans”, she wrote: “i have never before cried at the sight of my full name. i love you mr + mrs o. this is my grammy.”
