When superstar Erykah Badu posted the photo below of her performing in a headdress made of bottlecaps, celebrity friends including Cedric the Entertainer, Killer Mike, and Chaka Khan chimed in with praise.
Badu captioned the photo: “My mama ain’t raise no punk but still I’m bottled up. (& will Bust a cap ),” and gave credit to Nigerian artisan Chioma Obiegbu for the headdress.
In the video above, Badu talks about her fascination with the Daasanech tribe of Ethiopia who are known for making jewelry and headdresses with found objects. Not only are they beautiful tribal artifacts but they make music as they move, too.
When she found Obiegbu, who does the same thing but makes wigs, she suggested that they collaborate. Badu says she challenged her to create a wig for her, a bob that goes down to her shoulders, made of bottlecaps. “It’s tribal,” she proclaims at the end of the video.
