On the Season 16 premiere of The Voice, reigning champion judge Kelly Clarkson returns with veteran judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. (Kelly’s teen country singer Chevel Shepherd won Season 15.) John Legend, the 10-time Grammy winner, Oscar winner (for his song “Glory” in Selma), and Tony winner (co-producer of Jitney), is replacing Jennifer Hudson. During the first round of Blind Auditions, all four judges listen to Kim Cherry. She sings, and raps part of the TLC song “No Scrubs.” It doesn’t take long for Kelly Clarkson to hit her buzzer, and when she turns around, she’s shocked to see that Kim is white.
[“No Scrubs” is on the TLC album FanMail]
The song “No Scrubs” refers to men who think they’re great but don’t do anything, hence, are undesirable to women. The song, which is on TLC’s third studio album FanMail (1999) was written by TLC’s Lisa Lopez and Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, Kevin Jerome Briggs, and Kandi Burruss, star of Real Housewives of Atlanta and recent competitor on Big Brother: Celebrity Edition. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 pm on NBC.
