CBS News visited a conference for people who believe the earth is flat. (It was not reported how many of the attendees used a GPS to get to the conference.) CBS reporter Brook Silva-Brag talked to many of the attendees for CBS Sunday Morning (see video below). It being Sunday, millions of people who had just returned from church where they were reassured that Jesus Christ is looking out for them, saw the program and thought the flat-earthers were crazy. But anyway. Flat earthers aren’t fools, they tell Silva-Brag: they can account for their unusual beliefs. Why don’t the oceans tumble off the sides of the flat earth, you wonder? Because the flat earth is surrounded by a giant wall of ice that keeps the oceans from pouring off. (It goes without saying that astronauts, according to flat-earthers, did not go to the moon. That Mars Rover thing? Nope, not that either.)
Flat-earther Patricia Steere told CBS News: “We’re not idiots. We’re intelligent people from all walks of life and all ages.” The idea of not believing anything they are told by experts or authorities represents a new kind of freedom for certain people, even if in practice it denies them practical, helpful knowledge that can help them live. Patricia Steere hosts a YouTube Channel (see video below) that claims almost 15,000 subscribers.
