In the Season 5 premiere of How To Get Away with Murder, “Your Funeral,” Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) selects students for her new legal clinic at Middleton Law School. A young man named Gabriel Maddox shows up for her advanced trials skills class. Annalise warns the students in the standing room only lecture hall that taking the class is a sacrifice – they won’t have time for friends and family. She gives each candidate a minute to articulate the case they’d want to bring to the Supreme Court. Maddox says he’d file suit against the state of Mississippi, to argue that every prison in the state is de facto for cruel and unusual punishment. He ultimately wants to abolish the entire prison system, state by state. She’s impressed.
