On the Bar Rescue episode “Down and Out in Las Vegas,” Jon Taffer travels to Las Vegas to check out Barley Pop’s. There he meets the owner, Chris Woodbury, who “spends more time drinking than running his bar.” Taffer eventually gets the owner to open up about the personal tragedies that push him toward drinking. He lost his 25-year-old stepson to cancer. His wife committed suicide soon after. She was 45. That was six years ago.

Taffer says he wants to help Chris look forward and not back — but it’s Chris who has to want that life and make it happen. On the show he says, “I’m ready to change for my family and my business.” Barley Pop’s became The Valley Saloon which became The Rose Grill, home of the deep fried burger. They’re also known for their bacon-wrapped pickles. New episodes of Bar Rescue air Sundays at 10pm on Paramount Network.
