The Top 7 contestants on American Idol got to perform two songs before the Top 5 were revealed on Sunday, May 6. Each performed a song from the Prince catalog and a song from the year they were born. 18-year-old Catie Turner chosethe iconic 2000 Britney Spears song “Oops…I Did It Again.” It’s about a girl who sees love as a game and toys with her lover’s emotions. (Britney was 19 at the time and dating Justin Timberlake, just sayin’.) And guess what? Not surprisingly Catie DOES IT AGAIN!
[The Bangles Greatest Hits includes “Manic Monday” and “Walk Like an Egyptian”]
For her Prince song, Catie totally nailed the song “Manic Monday” which Prince wrote in 1984 using the pseudonym “Christopher.” The song is about a woman waking up on Monday, wishing it was Sunday so she didn’t have to go to work. In the first verse of “Manic Monday” is the line “I was just in the middle of a dream/ I was kissin’ Valentino/ By a crystal blue Italian stream.” In the last verse is the line: “He tells me in his bedroom voice/ C’mon honey, let’s go make some noise.” The song was originally intended for Prince’s girl band Apollonia 6 but two years later he offered it to The Bangles. At one of The Bangles’ live shows, Prince joined them on stage and sang backup. Prince would have loved Catie, don’t you think? See video below. American Idol airs Sundays at 8pm on ABC.
