The Dateline episode “One Moment,” investigates the 2001 murder of 27-year-old Crystal Taylor who was pregnant at the time of her death. Taylor was about to leave for work when she was shot in the parking garage of her Hawthorne, California apartment building. Sixteen years later, in May 2017, Skyler Jefferson Moore and Derek Paul Smyer were convicted of the two murders. Prosecutors say Smyer arranged to have Moore kill Taylor, who was pregnant with Smyer’s baby and refused to have an abortion.
While a jury deadlocked on whether or not Moore should receive the death penalty, Moore is already serving a life prison sentence without the possibility of parole for an unrelated 2001 killing. Moore’s attorney Richard Everett says his client did not kill Crystal Taylor. Everett says Moore was in solitary confinement when detectives interviewed him about the Taylor killing and told Moore they could get him better living conditions in prison if he cooperated and gave what Everett says is a “false confession.” Dateline airs Fridays at 9pm on NBC.
