Anybody who watches Penn State’s Saquon Barkley catch this screen pass (below) and leap over the Iowa defense for the first down — and them some — thinks “wow, what an athlete.” But part-time TV star and full time venture capital investor Ashton Kutcher has transitioned perfectly from playing the past (That ’70s Show) to predicting the future (his investment portfolio). And Kutcher had the best, most telling reaction to the Saquon Barkley play.
“This dude,” Kutcher wrote, “is playing on the wrong day of the week.” In college of course, they play on Saturdays. Barkley obviously should be playing on Sunday — in the NFL. If Kutcher were investing in college players, you get the feeling he’d be all in on Barkley — the way he’s been on Spotify, Airbnb, Uber and others. Since Barkley is by most accounts leading the race for the Heisman Trophy, it’s not as if Kutcher had to be a visionary to shout out Saquon. But much of investing in the future is about seeing what’s plain in front of your nose. Kutcher saw Barkley and just knew that he’s playing on the wrong day. And the ability to express yourself concisely — the way Kutcher does — never hurt anybody, right?
