Kechi Okwuchi is one of the many talented singers auditioning for America’s Got Talent, Season 12. The Nigerian-born 27-year-old who now lives in Pearland, Texas, let her Facebook friends know that she’s going to be on TV, “which is very strange.” Not only is Kechi sharing her talent on AGT but she’s also sharing her story of survival. In 2005, when Kechi was 16, she one of the two survivors of a plane crash that took the lives of 107 passengers. She suffered third-degree burns over 65 percent of her body.
After several surgeries and reconstructive operations, Kechi graduated summa cum laude from University of St. Thomas. In 2016, she started a GoFundMe campaign to raise the $36,000 needed to pursue a Master’s Degree in Economics. (She’s been accepted into the MBA program but could not afford it.) She has since raised $30,000. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
