Shaq has always been larger than life, and now he’s immortal in Lakerland thanks to a new statue of the Big Aristotle (see below). The big bronze Shaquille O’Neal is even bigger than the living breathing Shaq, ten feet all and weighing in at a reported 1500 pounds. That’s 1200 pounds above Shaq’s playing weight — and only Shaq knows how far it exceeds his commentator weight. Players don’t often lose weight when they move from the court to the studio. But Shaq, as always, looks good.
The bronze Shaq likeness will be suspended in the air, making him a permanent skywalker and probably pissing off Kobe Bryant — but that’s another story. Until Bryant’s statue is installed in the Staples Center courtyard (and it will be, and it will be big), bronze Shaq will keep company with Lakers legends Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West, announcer Chick Hearn and also boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya and hockey greats Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille.
