From the creators of Empire comes Star. The title character is a diamond in the rough. After being raised in the foster care system, she tracks down her sister Simone (Brittany O’Grady) and teams up with her best friend Alexandra (Ryan Destiny) to form a girl band. Along the way they’re nurtured by a surrogate mother named Carlotta (Queen Latifah) and used by talent agent Jahil (Benjamin Bratt).
Star is portrayed by 24-year-old Detroit native Jude Demorest. As an actress, she’s known for her role as Candace on Dallas (Candace). As a songwriter she’s known for the Fifth Harmony song “Work From Home“ which was featured in the movie Bad Moms starring Mila Kunis and Kristen Bell. You can also hear Demorest sing on the Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip soundtrack (“Get Me to the Party”). About her role as Star, Demorest told Vanity Fair: “Girls who look like Star aren’t represented on television. It’s an honor to be a part of Lee’s bravery and the very real stories he wants to tell.” (She’s talking about Empire, Star and Monster’s Ball producer Lee Daniels.) Star premieres on Wednesday, December 14 at 9pm on FOX, right after Empire.
