Bobby Kennedy, Jr. was asked by Brian Lehrer about the story that the traditional Kennedy July 4th celebration this year featured a giant pinata of Donald Trump and that the Kennedy clan took turns bashing it. Kennedy copped to the Trump pinata’s presence at the affair, even taking the blame himself. He and his wife bought it at the store — they apparently couldn’t resist.
Kennedy, a lifelong environmental activist, fears Trump’s election for numerous reasons — not least that Trump would be the only elected head of state in the world who still believes “global warming is a hoax.” Kennedy said that Trump’s strategy is easy to name and has lots of precursors in the past: it’s called demagoguery, Kennedy said. And it’s an easy way to attract a certain portion of the population, appealing to the worst parts of our nature. As for the pinata of Trump at the party? “I don’t apologize for it,” Kennedy said. “There’s a long history of making effigys of tyrants.”
[For those who want to participate in that history, or just see what it looks like, here’s a Trump pinata for sale.]
