Lilly Wachowski decided to beat rabid reporters to the “scoop” that she’s no longer part of the Wachowsi Brothers — she’s a Wachowski sister. Wachowski gave a statement to the Windy City Times announcing what reporters were calling the “Andy Wachowski gender transition” story. By announcing her gender story herself, she took the air out of potential “scoops” by the likes of The Daily Mail, she says.
Wachowski thought she’d rather tell people herself and control the narrative — as much as possible. After all, controlling the narrative is her expertise, since Wachowski, along with her sister Lana, controlled one of the most culturally penetrating narratives of recent vintage: the movie trilogy, The Matrix. The Matrix made them rich and famous. Lilly’s sister Lana Wachowski told the public she was a trans woman in 2012 and received accolades for her courage. She said at the time that part of her inspiration for going public was to encourage others — so that “the sacrifice of my private life may have value.” Lilly follows suit.
