Tacos in space? So much for the image of astronauts giving up all the luxuries of earth to explore the final frontier on our behalf. We’ve gone from “Houston, we have a problem” to “El Paso, time for lunch!” Astronaut Scott Kelly puts together creamed spinach, asparagus and grilled chicken — “it’s gonna go on a tortilla” he says — for a tasty space snack in the video below. Kelly is cooking at the International Space Station, where he’s spending a year doing the brave work (just kidding before) of testing out space for us. The coolest thing about Kelly’s trip is that his identical twin brother Mark is spending the year on earth, presumably also eating tacos, so scientists can test the differences in their bodies after the year is up. Kelly’s brother Mark is, incidentally, planning to spend all his years on earth.
But Scott Kelly isn’t the only one getting his custom cuisine on in space. Last summer the European Space Agency (ESA) posted a video of Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti cooking one of her favorite dishes, sans gravity: whole red rice with peas and chicken turmeric. Something about space, apparently, gives one a craving for spicy.
