The 2015 film Spotlight is based on the true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the sexual abuse scandal and the cover-up within the Boston Catholic Archdiocese in the early 2000s. The film is nominated for three Golden Globes — Best Motion Picture, Drama; Best Director; and Best Screenplay. Spotlight was written and directed by Tom McCarthy.
McCarthy the 49-year-old writer/director is best known for his 2003 film The Station Agent starring Peter Dinklage and Bobby Cannavale, and his 2011 film Win Win starring Paul Giamatti. Fun fact: McCarthy was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the animated 2009 film Up. As an actor, McCarthy is recognized for his TV roles on The Wire (Scott Templeton) and Boston Public (Kevin Riley), and in the films Syriana (Fred Franks), Good Night, and Good Luck (Palmer Williams), Flags of Our Fathers (James Bradley), Little Fockers and Meet the Parents (Dr. Bob Banks), among others.
