Jess McClary was in culinary school in Detroit when she opened a home-based bakery. She started selling her baked goods – all made with seasonal Michigan produce — at a local farmers market. When she discovered drinking vinegars (aka shrubs), she started experimenting. “There are no cookbooks for this sort of thing,” Jess explains on her website.

Now she’s bottling her own line of drinking vinegars, McClary Bros. Drinking Vinegars, which are ideal for making mixed drinks. And they don’t have all the artificial flavors, colors and preservatives that typical drink mixers have. (McClary Bros. is named for her 4-year-old twin boys Jack and Ben.) Her line includes five flavors, each available in 16 oz bottles for $18/each: Lemon & Ginger, Michigan Apple Pie, Michigan Basil, Michigan Beet & Carrot, and Pineapple & Fennel Seed. There’s also a Premium Flavor, Detroit Thai Basil, which costs extra ($25 for a 16 oz. bottle).
