Howard Stern put the shock in “Shock Jock” and now somebody’s taking it out. Longtime Stern admirers have thrown up their hands at the polished fart-free elder statesmen who opines weekly on TV’s America’s Got Talent. At least the faithful still had their radio Howard, who could be counted on to talk in utterly insensitive teenage lingo, scorching taboos along the way. But no more. Even radio Howard has changed gears. Gary the Retard is Gary the Conqueror — and that’s just one example, though illustrative of the change.

The New York Post blames (or credits) SiriusXM COO Marci Turk for re-branding Howard for broader audience appeal. But the Howard Stern transition has been underway for a long time. (That’s why others blame his second wife, Beth Stern, who predates Turk in the Stern orbit.) There is a lot of speculation about where Stern will take his act when his Sirius deal expires at year’s end, with suitors expected to come from everywhere. (Spotifiy and iTunes are often mentioned.)
