Bernie Sanders accepted Liberty University’s invitation to speak at a September 14 convocation on its campus. Sanders said yes. Liberty University is a conservative Christian school in Virginia founded by the late Jerry Falwell. Liberty has long been a stop for Republicans seeking the blessing, so to speak, of the Christian right. Speakers over the years have included Ted Cruz, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Jeb Bush and others looking to secure a GOP nomination.

But according to former Liberty University president Johnnie Moore, the school was always more broad when issuing invitations than its speaker list would indicate. The Bernie Sanders invitation didn’t break any new ground. Only his acceptance did. Liberty has also invited Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden. Moore says they never replied.
