R&B singer Alicia Michilli is hoping to advance on America’s Got Talent. The 24-year-old wowed the audience with her rendition of Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind.” What might surprise fans to learn is that Michilli was rejected by Oakland University’s musical-theater program. She now says the rejection was the best thing that could’ve happened.

Michilli told The Oakland Press: “I wouldn’t have moved to Nashville and started writing my own songs.” She moved to Nashville at age 20. When not working as a restaurant hostess to pay the bills, she’s performing at Keb’ Mo’s Monthly Music Night at Fontanel’s Pepsi Studio Gallery. She sings there with the band Music City Toppers. Michilli will perform live at Radio City Music Hall on America’s Got Talent on August 25 at 8pm on NBC.
