Comedian Myq (pronounced “Mike”) Kaplan made it through the Judges Cut on America’s Got Talent. From his standup routine, you’d think he’s been doing comedy all of his life. But that’s not the case. Kaplan started out as a singer.

He says when he was in college (he has a master’s degree in linguistics from Boston University!) he would sing at open mics and realized how much he enjoyed talking in between songs. “So I kept doing that.” Plus, as Kaplan said at the time, “it was easier than carrying a guitar around all the time.” Smart move, Myq. Since then he’s appeared on all the late night shows including Letterman and Conan. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
