Patrick Mouratoglou currently occupies two very enviable roles all by himself: Mouratoglou is World No. 1 tennis star Serena Williams’ boyfriend and coach. Sounds like a recipe for disaster? Well, it’s working for Williams, who seems to possess a fearsome determination never to lose and never to grow old. (She’s 33 — veritable dotage in tennis — and just won her 20th major.)

Maybe the tricky dual role can only be performed by someone known on Facebook as Coach Mouratoglou “The Mastermind.” The Mastermind has coached Marcos Baghdatis, Julia Vakulenko, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Jérémy Chardy, Laura Robson and Grigor Dimitrov — to name just a few. For almost 20 years, he has run the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Nice, France. Mouratoglou’s favorite quote, which he may not have yet shared with Serena, is: “The verb love is hard to conjugate. Its past isn’t simple, its present is only indicative and its future is always conditional.” Mouratoglou is 45.
