Sabrina Broadbent was once a loyal member of the FLDS Church (the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). She broke free of the Mormon polygamist community that lives along the Utah and Arizona border eight years ago. But Boradbent was forced to leave her four children behind. Just last month she was officially awarded custody. When Boradbent went to pick up the kids, she was surrounded by church security, known as The God Squad. Over a fence, one of her kids told her they didn’t want to leave. “Get away from me,” her eldest Isaac yelled to his mother.
It was a 22-hour standoff. With the help of the sheriff, Broadbent finally took the children away. ABC’s 20/20 will air interviews with Sabrina and two other parents who extracted their children from what they see “as a life of hardship and servitude” in the FLDS Church on Friday, May 8 at 10pm.
