Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel will retire at the end of the season, according to the team. Friedel will retire with a number of distinctions, including having played more Premier League games than any other American. Friedel also holds the record for consecutive starts in the Premier League, at 310 a number that will be difficult to approach. He began his Premier League career at Liverpool in 1997 and is still the only American to play for the Reds.
“I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved in my career,” said Friedel in a statement on the Tottenham site. “When I first started the journey I never imagined it would be this long, playing 23 seasons in total and representing some incredible clubs.” Friedel, an Ohio native, attended UCLA.
