Bill Clinton, for better and worse, is a man who knows how money buys influence. But even Bill Clinton was infuriated at the level of rampant corruption going on at FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, long before the recent arrests of many FIFA executives. In fact, it was likely Bill Clinton’s intense rage at FIFA’s 2010 decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar that eventually brought down FIFA’s house of bribes.

Clinton was part of the team that represented America’s bid to host the World Cup in 2012. It was universally acknowledged that Qatar, with its blisteringly high temperatures and lack of infrastructure, was a horrible choice to host the most complex sports tournament in the world. Clinton was said to be “humiliated” by FIFA’s Qatar award. All the oil-rich Qatar did have going for it was money, which it allegedly used for bribes in the millions. Clinton remained irate and pressed for investigations, despite FIFA donating hopeful hush money of more than $50,000 to the Clinton Foundation.
