General David Petraeus, whose extramarital affair and lying besmirched his military career and his reputation for excellence, was fined $100,000 today and given two years probation. General Petraeus leaked classified information to his mistress Paula Broadwell. Broadwell was also his biographer. In her biography, Broadwell reports that Petraeus is terrific!
The sentence came down two months after Petraeus pleaded guilty to a “federal misdemeanor count of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material.” Petraeus gave Broadwell eight binders of classified documents he had improperly kept from his time as the US commander in Afghanistan. The $100,000 shouldn’t bother him. Petraeus parlayed his military service into a gig with KKR, one of the richest and most successful private equity firms.
