Dr. George Blumenschein worked at Houston’s famed Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. That’s where he met Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, a fellow researcher. Even though he was still living with his girlfriend of 10 years, Evette Toney, Dr. Blumenschein had an affair with Gonzalez-Angulo. It didn’t end well. After Blumenschein “spurned her” in favor of Toney, Gonzalez-Angulo became obsessed with Blumenschein and poisoned him with ethylene glycol (in his coffee).
Blumenschein survived. At the trial, Blumenschein testified that his life span was shortened by the poisoning–he now has only 40 percent of his kidney function. Gonzalez-Angulo was convicted of aggravated assault. She is serving 10 years in prison. Dateline NBC will reveal all the dramatic details of the affair and assault on April 10 at 10pm.
