The US Department of Justice announced it will bring criminal charges against Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). What is Menendez accused of?
The charges stem from Menendez’s involvement with two fugitive bankers from Ecuador, who stand accused in their home country of stealing tens of millions (at least) from a bank they ran there. The men–William and Roberto Isaias–are brothers who now live in Florida. They remain wanted in Ecuador. Senator Menendez has written multiple letters and made phone calls on their behalf to government agencies like Homeland Security. Partly as a result of Menendez’s efforts, they have not been extradited. The Isaias brothers have contributed at least $100,000 to Menendez. Menendez also flies on their private jet. Last year, under pressure, Menendez reimbursed them $58K for the rides.
