Lucid Energy has partnered with the city of Portland to install pipes that will tap Portland’s existing water supply to generate electricity. By putting turbines in its underground pipes, the city will generate hydroelectricity–to the tune of $2 million over 20 years according to Lucid. It’s an innovative example of the green energy imperative to use what’s already there–like the sun and wind.
The system started generating electricity in December 2014 and is scheduled to hit full capacity in March 2015. The initiative is being funded privately, with no cost to the city of Portland, which will receive a portion of the sales from the energy generated.
