A rumor that Tumblr user accounts were being deleted willy-nilly for rampant copyright violations spread among Tumblr users like a California wildfire. A user named stewardessme, according to the Daily Dot, had her account flagged and deleted for posting copyrighted audio. Tumblr was supposedly cracking down on this to avoid becoming piracy central. And a reblog of Stewardessme’s post blaming it all on the “GET” button became popular. The “GET” button apparently made the download and sharing of copyrighted info so easy it was virtually encouraged.
But that stewardessme post getting a lot of attention (over 115,000 notes on it) had a problem: there is no “GET” button. And there never was one, apparently. Tumblr’s way of dealing with copyright violations is the same as ever: it deletes material if it receives a complaint, warns the offender, and the user needs three separate violations in 18 months to face account deletion. It can happen, but don’t panic. The site’s not out to “GET” you.
