In 2012, approximately 10,000 Chinese women traveled to the US to give birth. That’s more than double the 4,200 Chinese who delivered in the US in 2008. Why is the birth tourism industry booming? Mothers want their children to have American citizenship for a number of reasons. Some want to send their child to study in the US. Some want their American-born children to eventually move to the US and “then sponsor their parents when they turn 21.”
The big catch is: once you get a U.S. passport, you will “eventually be responsible for U.S. taxes.”
