American cartoonist Robert Crumb has been living in France for the past 25 years. Celia Farber of The New York Observer interviewed him by phone to discuss the Charlie Hebdo murders in Paris. He said Liberation wanted him to draw a cartoon so he submitted two drawings including one titled, “The Hairy Ass of Muhammed.”
When Crumb showed the cartoon to his wife Aline she said, “Oh, my God, we’re going to have to go into hiding,” which inspired the second cartoon submitted to Liberation. It’s a drawing of her looking at the first drawing saying “Oh, my God, they’re going to come after us! This is terrible…I want to live to see my grandchildren!” And then she has me saying, “Well, it’s not that bad. And, besides, they’ve killed enough cartoonists, maybe they’ve gotten it out of their system.”
