The indoor arena at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, the Izod Center, is expected to close as soon as February. The Christie administration is asking the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority board to approve a plan that would close the 18,000 seat arena. Acts booked at the Izod Center for February and March could be relocated to the Prudential Center in Newark.
Between 2007 and 2010, the Izod Center lost its tenants – the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, and the Seton Hall University basketball team. For the past two years, it’s been used for a handful of concerts and school graduations. Approximately 150 people work at the Izod Center full-time (70 in administrative; 80 tradesmen). NorthJersey.com provides a helpful list of highlights of the arena’s troubled history.
