Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) and PlayStation Store were hacked by Lizard Squad. This is the same group that took down Microsoft’s Xbox Live network last week. Lizard Squad used a distributed denial of service (DDoS) to take the network down. Just last week, Sony Pictures was hacked – sensitive information including social security numbers of actors and information regarding unreleased movies was leaked.
Lizard Squad has taken credit for causing PSN’s latest outage. ExtremeTech.com guesses it was done by “perhaps ‘zombie’ computers; thousands of home and office PCs that have been taken over by some kind of malware, to be used en masse in a DDoS attack.” DDoS attacks are popular because their almost impossible to prevent, and have a huge impact.
