Golfing legend Jack Nickaus will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor that Congress can give. That is, unless the President sees an opportunity! According to an AP report, the paperwork to grant Nicklaus the honor cleared Congress late Monday. Now all it needs is President Barack Obama’s signature.
But given President Obama’s recent willingness to go it alone, there is joking speculation that the First Duffer may make a demand of Nicklaus before he signs off. The Golden Bear, as Nicklaus is known, has one thing Obama wants desperately, according to all reports–Nicklaus knows golf’s elusive secrets. The President has played more than 200 rounds of golf while in office, including a round last week with Derek Jeter in Las Vegas. But despite this his handicap remains unimproved. (Michael Jordan called Obama’s game ‘sh–ty.’) Maybe it’ll just take a few tips from Nicklaus on the phone to get the President’s pen to cooperate. But he’s going to call. You know he is.
