The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an announcement regarding the consumption of commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples. “As of December 18, 2014, a total of 28 people infected with the outbreak strains of Listeria monocytogenes have been reported from 10 states.” 26 of the 28 have been hospitalized, five deaths have been reported. Listeriosis contributed to at least four of those deaths.
Symptoms of the illness include fever, stiff neck, confusion, weakness, vomiting, sometimes preceded by diarrhea. At risk populations include pregnant women, older adults and children.
