The San Francisco Police Department holds upward of 600 stolen bicycles at Hunter’s Point Warehouse. They hold them for 18 months. If not claimed, the bikes are donated to various charities. Gio Benitz of ABC 20/20 uses tracking equipment to trace stolen bikes which often turn up at flea markets for sale. The report airs Friday, December 5 at 8pm on ABC.
Here are five tips to prevent your bike from being stolen. 1. Don’t depend on cable locks – buy a u-lock. 2. Write down your serial number, make, model and color of the bike. 3. Take pictures of it. 4. Replace quick release bolts with skewer sets. 5. Lock up your bike even in your garage!
