Star Citizen, the video game that has demolished all previous crowdfunding records, surpassed $60 million in funds raised. (When we wrote about Star Citizen in July, it was at $49 million.)
Cloud Imperium Games, the maker of Star Citizen, is building such a vast “space sim” environment it won’t even function on the major consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. PC Gamer wrote that the consoles “couldn’t possibly handle Star Citizen.” Development chief Eric Peterson has said Star Citizen will probably support a maximum of 50 to 70 players at once.* One of the big points of differential for Star Citizen is customization: the player decides how he (or she) wants to enter and compete in the game–be it as a smuggler, bounty hunter, spy or myriad other options. Users who have pledged enough to secure a ship can enter their “very early pre-alpha” hangars now and “walk around.”
