When actress Elizabeth McGovern isn’t playing Lady Cora Crawley on Downton Abbey, she can be found performing with her folk/country band, Sadie and The Hotheads. The band appears on the Christmas at Downton Abbey album released this week.
“It’s just a really nice collection of Christmas songs done in a classical way, with the Budapest City Orchestra and a beautiful choir,” McGovern told People magazine. And with cast members singing! McGovern does a solo version of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” as well as a duet of “The First Noel” with fellow Downton cast mate Julian Ovenden. This may give Ovenden’s character Charles Blake the edge as he vies for Lady Mary’s attentions in the new season. It’s not Ovenden’s only song on the album. And fitting with the Downton times, there’s a cool reading of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” by the actor Jim Carter (Carson on Downton Abbey).
